Douglas Elementary School

DES is a pre-kindergarten through 5th grade building. With typical class sizes of 20 students, our teachers are able to offer students the individual attention needed for all learners to excel.

In recognition of our high standards and commitment to excellence, Douglas Elementary was awarded the prestigious Blue Ribbon School distinction in 2007 by the Michigan Department of Education. The award was given to only 23 schools in the state for achievement of high academic standards, a comprehensive framework for school effectiveness, and communication of best educational practices within and among schools.

Our experienced and dedicated faculty team works hard to motivate and challenge each student in our school. Our teachers are experts at differentiating instruction for students, meeting each child at his/her level coming into the classroom and taking them to the next level of learning. In addition, DES teachers are supported by on-staff specialists in their efforts to meet individual student needs. Our Reading Intervention Specialist, Curriculum and G/T Coordinator, and Differentiation Coach help ensure that our school is able to provide a continuum of services for students at all learning levels.

Douglas Elementary School has a full schedule of academics and specials that includes art, physical education, general music, Spanish, and informational technology/multimedia instruction. After school clubs in science and technology, art, gardening, journalism, mathematics, and creative problem solving provide additional enrichment for interested students. In addition, DES has athletic offerings in basketball, football, softball, baseball, and soccer through our Community Recreation department. Upper elementary students can join the SPS ski club and the Girls on the Run self-esteem building and running program for girls.

During the 2007-08 school year, our elementary school received the Michigan Surgeon General's Healthy Schools Award for providing students with healthy choices and the Michigan Green School Award for our efforts in recycling and maintaining a green environment.

For the third year, DES received the $40,000 Michigan Department of Agriculture grant that allows us to continue to give each student and staff member fresh fruit and vegetable snacks daily in the classroom. In addition, Douglas Elementary School is a national satellite school for the Bal-a-vis-x program. Bal-a-vis-x is a series of balance, auditory, and vision exercises designed to improve cognitive integration and increase the likelihood of student academic success.
